The Truth About Spiritual Disruption and Identity Shifts

If you’ve ever had that moment where you stop and think, “This isn’t the life I’m meant to live anymore,” you’re not alone—and you’re not broken. You may be experiencing what we call sacred disruption.

Sometimes, sacred disruption is a whisper. Other times, it feels like a wrecking ball. Either way, it’s a soul-level moment that says: something needs to change.

In this episode of Wisdom Within, we (Tonya and Tina) explore how sacred disruptions show up, why they matter, and how to move through them with clarity instead of chaos.

What is Sacred Disruption?

Sacred disruption isn’t about destruction for the sake of it. It’s the deep inner knowing that the roles, routines, and rules you’ve lived by no longer serve who you are becoming. It can show up as dissatisfaction, frustration, grief, or even a sense of restlessness that you can’t quite explain.

Sometimes you initiate the change. Sometimes life does it for you.

Two Types of Disruption: The Nudge and The Earthquake

There’s the nudge—the subtle but persistent feeling that something is off. Maybe you start dreading what you used to enjoy. Or you notice your energy drop when doing the same routines. You might feel grief for a version of life that never quite materialized.

Then there’s the earthquake—a life event that shakes your foundation: a divorce, job loss, illness, burnout, or a crisis of faith. These moments can feel like everything is falling apart—but what if they’re really falling into place?

Signs You’re in a Sacred Disruption

  • Resentment toward routines, roles, or expectations

  • Sudden loneliness even when surrounded by people

  • A deep pull to question long-held beliefs

  • Emotional overwhelm or old wounds resurfacing

  • Feeling done—but not yet sure what’s next

Your body often knows before your mind does. Resistance, physical discomfort, or intuitive nudges are signs you’re being called inward.

Disruption Isn’t Always Dramatic

Not every disruption is loud. Some happen slowly over months or years. You might feel a shift inside long before anything changes on the outside. What seems like an overnight decision may have been brewing within you for a long time.

This was true for both of us. Tonya shares about her religious deconstruction. Tina talks about redefining how she shows up in her work. Both were years in the making.

Identity Shifts and Letting Go

One of the hardest parts of disruption is the loss of identity. You stop being who you were—and you’re not yet who you’re becoming. This is where grief often surfaces: grieving roles like “mother,” “wife,” “helper,” or “overachiever.”

We talk about:

  • The pressure to keep everything looking okay

  • The fear of disappointing people as you change

  • Letting go of people-pleasing and outdated belief systems

You may even lose people as you rise. That’s part of the process—and not a sign that you’re doing it wrong.

Reclaiming Your Power Through Disruption

The power in sacred disruption is that it brings you back to yourself. The chaos is not the point—the clarity is.

You don’t have to rush to fix things. You don’t have to know exactly what’s next. But you do get to listen. To stop minimizing your needs. To stop playing roles that no longer fit. To let your truth rise.

And when you do—when you answer the call—you become the steady center of your own life.

You’re Not Behind. You’re Becoming.

If you’re in the messy middle right now, this is your reminder:

You’re not behind. You’re not broken. You’re not too late.

You’re becoming.

Sacred disruption isn’t something to fear. It’s something to trust. It’s a soul activation, a reclaiming, and an invitation to live from your truth—not your programming.

We see you. We’ve been there. And we’re walking it with you.
