When No One Listens: The Pain of Not Being Heard
For generations, women have been silenced—not because they had nothing to say, but because their truth threatened the systems around them.
Whether in our homes, churches, workplaces, or communities, many of us have learned that staying silent keeps us safe—and speaking up comes with consequences. In this conversation, we (Tina and Tonya) open up about our own experiences with being dismissed, ignored, or outright silenced, and how that pain often begins early and runs deep.
The Stories That Shaped Us
We’ve both carried stories where our voices were shut down. Tonya shared a moment from her early twenties when she finally connected with her mom over religion—only to be abruptly cut off and told, “I will not hear this from the likes of you.” That moment didn’t just sever the connection. It reinforced a powerful internal message: “What I have to say will never be taken seriously.”
Tina spoke of years of emotional bypassing in her family, learning to keep everything surface-level in order to avoid conflict. As a child, she was praised for being quiet and well-behaved—when in reality, she was terrified of speaking up.
These stories are not rare. They’re common. And they carry forward into adulthood, shaping how we show up, how we relate, and how we trust (or don’t trust) ourselves.
Generational Silencing & The Witch Wound
Much of this pain doesn’t start with us—it’s generational. From the deeply ingrained cultural messages passed through our families to the witch wound that still echoes today, we’ve been taught for centuries that it’s dangerous to be seen, to stand out, or to speak up.
During the Burning Times, women were literally silenced to death. Those who survived learned to silence their daughters out of protection. That fear didn’t vanish—it just evolved.
Now, instead of being burned, we’re shamed. Labeled as too much, too emotional, too intense. And when we finally do speak up—especially after years of swallowing our pain—it often comes out as sacred rage. Then we’re called unstable, dramatic, or crazy.
The Illusion of Strength
Another layer of this silencing is the “strong woman” narrative. We praised ourselves for being able to handle everything—for holding space, for taking care of others, for carrying the weight.
But strength that’s based on self-abandonment isn’t real strength. It’s survival.
We talked about the subtle ways we’re silenced through over-responsibility. How being busy, being the dependable one, the caretaker, the over-functioner—all keep us too tired to hear our own truth. And how that, too, is a form of control.
When Women Silence Each Other
One of the more painful truths is that women often silence each other.
We’ve both experienced wounding at the hands of other women—mothers, sisters, friends, and even other healers. And much of it stems from fear. From internalized patriarchy. From the idea that there’s only so much space, and if one woman rises, it threatens the others.
But we believe this cycle can be broken. And it starts with each of us choosing to be a safe space for other women—to listen, to witness, and to not look away when truth is spoken.
Reclaiming Your Voice
Reclaiming your voice doesn’t always mean shouting. Sometimes it means journaling what you wish you’d said. Sometimes it’s placing your hand on your throat and whispering, “My truth is safe with me.” Sometimes it’s walking away from those who can’t or won’t hear you.
And sometimes, it’s therapy. It’s energy work. It’s sitting with a trusted circle of women who remind you that you are not too much. You are not crazy. You are just not being heard—and that’s going to change.
Because when we reclaim our voice, we reclaim our power.
And when we heal, we do it for the seven generations that came before and the seven that will come after.
