Stop Overgiving: Reclaim the Love You Never Received
For so many women, the wound they carry isn’t visible. It lives under the surface in the form of chronic overgiving, constant self-doubt, exhaustion, and the quiet longing to be nurtured in the way they never were.
This is the Mother Wound. And healing it is not about rejecting your mom, blaming your past, or casting judgment. It’s about recognizing what was missing, what you silently inherited, and deciding to give yourself what you need now.
What Is the Mother Wound?
The Mother Wound refers to the pain, unmet needs, and internalized beliefs we carry when the nurturing, unconditional love we needed as children was not fully received. This can be the result of:
-
A mother who experienced her own unhealed trauma
-
A family system that didn’t model emotional support or boundaries
-
Cultural or generational expectations of “being good,” self-sacrificing, or emotionally silent
The wound isn’t just emotional – it shows up physically and energetically too. It lives in your body as burnout, resentment, and the chronic compulsion to put everyone else first. And often, the wound keeps you quietly waiting. Waiting for the apology that may never come. Waiting to be cared for the way you should have been. Waiting for someone to finally say, “You matter, too.”
Signs You Carry the Mother Wound
-
Overgiving to the point of burnout
-
Struggling to set or maintain boundaries
-
Fear of being “too much” or not enough
-
Suppressing emotions or people-pleasing
-
Feeling guilty when resting or receiving
-
A deep craving to feel safe, held, or loved unconditionally
Many women live their entire lives from this place and never realize why. They become the strong one. The nurturer. The reliable one. But they are also tired. Quietly resentful. And often unsure how to care for themselves in the way they so easily care for others.
Healing Begins When You Say: Enough.
Healing the Mother Wound begins with reclaiming your right to receive what was missing. That might mean:
-
Giving yourself permission to rest without guilt
-
Speaking kindly to yourself when the inner critic gets loud
-
Letting yourself grieve what wasn’t given, so you can stop trying to earn it
-
Listening to your body and honoring its needs
-
Creating simple rituals of self-nurturing, like lighting a candle or sitting on the Earth
This healing is not selfish. It is sacred repair. It is your birthright.
You were never meant to abandon yourself to be loved.
Reconnecting to the Mother Within
Many of us still carry a longing for someone to come in and “kiss the wound,” to say, “It’s okay, I’ve got you.” But part of this journey is realizing: You are the one who gets to say that now.
You are the one who:
-
Sits in the quiet and places a hand on your heart
-
Says no when it stretches you too thin
-
Lets the dishes wait while you rest
-
Speaks to yourself with tenderness
-
Stops overdoing, overgiving, overproving
And as you do this, you begin to break the silent inheritance. You begin to rewire the old programming. You begin to shift the pattern not just for yourself, but for those who come after you.
Practices for Healing the Mother Wound
-
Create a self-mothering altar. Add items that feel nurturing: photos, a candle, a soft cloth, a flower, a note of encouragement.
-
Use the five love languages on yourself. What do you wish someone had said or done for you? Start doing that now.
-
Ground into Earth energy. Lie on the ground. Place your hands in soil. Feel yourself held by something greater.
-
Honor your emotions without judgment. Sadness, anger, grief, joy – they are all sacred. You don’t need permission to feel.
-
Practice sacred self-trust. When your intuition whispers, listen. Don’t water it down or defer to others. You know what you know.
You Don’t Need to Earn Nurturing
The healing begins when you stop waiting.
Stop waiting for permission. Stop waiting for someone else to change. Stop waiting to be worthy. You already are.
And you already hold the love you never received.
