How to Trust Yourself & Stop Second-Guessing Everything

Do you struggle with trusting yourself? You’re not alone. Many of us have been conditioned to seek external validation, second-guess our choices, or fear making the wrong decision. But learning to trust yourself is one of the most empowering things you can do.

In this post, we’ll explore:
✔️ 3 challenges that make trusting yourself difficult
✔️ 3 powerful strategies to strengthen your inner knowing
✔️ A simple way to start trusting yourself more today

Let’s dive in.

Why Do We Struggle to Trust Ourselves?

1. Past Conditioning

From a young age, we’re taught to listen to authority figures—parents, teachers, religious leaders—rather than our own inner voice. Over time, this conditions us to look outside ourselves for answers rather than trusting our own wisdom.

As Tina shared:

“I was always taught that women should act a certain way. I also had a habit of saying exactly what was on my mind, and people would say, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe you said that.’ Over time, I learned to filter myself, and it made me question my own insights.”

Similarly, I experienced this firsthand when I was going through a divorce. I knew deep in my soul that leaving was the right decision, but family members kept offering alternative solutions, making me doubt myself. This is exactly how self-trust is eroded—when our instincts tell us one thing, but external voices make us question it.

2. Fear of Making the Wrong Decision

Many of us are paralyzed by the idea of choosing the “wrong” path. We overanalyze, hesitate, and delay decisions in hopes of finding certainty.

Tina summed it up perfectly:

“No path is wrong—it just might take you longer depending on the one you take. But the fear of making the wrong decision can keep us stuck in overthinking, trying to be perfect instead of trusting ourselves.”

3. Overconsumption of External Advice

When we don’t trust ourselves, we seek answers everywhere—self-help books, YouTube videos, social media, friends, courses. While learning is valuable, constantly seeking external advice can drown out your own intuition.

I’ve done this myself. I’ve signed up for courses, listened to podcasts, and scrolled through social media, hoping to find the one golden insight that would solve everything. But 90% of the time, I didn’t implement what I learned because I was too busy looking for the next answer. Sound familiar?

3 Strategies to Strengthen Your Self-Trust

1. Practice Small Acts of Self-Trust

Self-trust isn’t built overnight—it grows with small, consistent decisions. Start with low-stakes choices:
✔️ Choosing what to eat without second-guessing yourself
✔️ Deciding which route to take on a walk
✔️ Picking a movie or book based on what excites you in the moment

For me, food was my first step. After leaving a toxic relationship, I had anxiety even ordering at restaurants because I was so used to seeking approval. To rebuild my confidence, I started eating out alone, choosing meals without asking for opinions, and trying new dishes. It sounds small, but it completely transformed my ability to trust myself.

Small decisions lead to bigger ones.

2. Use Your Body as a Guide

Your body is always giving you signals—you just have to listen.

  • If a decision lights you up or makes you feel expansive, it’s likely right for you.

  • If a decision causes tightness, anxiety, or dread, it may not be aligned.

  • Notice where you feel sensations: gut, chest, tension, ease.

Tina, who has a sacral authority in Human Design, explained it beautifully:

“For me, it’s a gut feeling. It’s a solid knowing in my stomach. But there were times when I ignored it and listened to others instead—and those were the moments I regretted.”

For me, as a Splenic Projector, my knowing comes in quick, instinctive hits—a quiet, immediate “yes” or “no.” If I hesitate, it’s usually not a yes.

Your intuition speaks in different ways depending on your design. If you’re unsure how to recognize your body’s wisdom, your Human Design chart can reveal how your inner guidance system works. (More on that below!)

3. Commit to a Self-Trust Detox

For the next 48 hours, challenge yourself to:
🚫 Avoid asking for advice from others
🚫 Stop looking for answers on social media or Google
🚫 Take a break from self-help content

Instead, sit with your own wisdom. Write your question in a journal and see what comes up. Meditate on it. Go for a walk. See what insights emerge.

When we constantly seek external input, we drown out our own inner voice. A self-trust detox will help you reconnect with it.

Bringing Self-Trust Into Your Daily Life

Trusting yourself is a practice—it’s not an instant fix. But if you commit to these small steps, your confidence will grow, and self-doubt will fade.
