Mastering Boundaries: How to Protect Your Energy from Toxic People
Setting boundaries can be one of the most challenging yet transformative steps you take for your well-being. In a world where we’re conditioned to people-please, conform, and suppress our needs to keep the peace, it’s no wonder that many of us feel drained, overwhelmed, and disconnected from our true selves. But here’s the truth: you deserve to protect your energy. You deserve relationships that support, nurture, and empower you, not ones that drain and deplete you.
In our latest episode of Wisdom Within, Tina and I dove into the deep end of setting boundaries—particularly with toxic people. These are the individuals in your life who push your limits, disrespect your needs, and often leave you feeling less than after every interaction. Whether it’s a family member, a friend, or even a co-worker, toxic people often challenge our sense of well-being. And that’s where strong, clear boundaries come in.
Why Boundaries Are Essential for Protecting Your Energy
I know firsthand how difficult it can be to recognize when a relationship is unhealthy. For years, I ignored the red flags because I thought it was my duty to keep the peace. I was taught to sweep my needs under the rug, to avoid making others uncomfortable. But what I’ve learned is that putting others’ comfort above your own is a fast track to emotional burnout.
“Setting boundaries is an act of self-love. It’s recognizing that your energy, time, and emotional well-being are just as important as anyone else’s.” – Tonya Marie
When you set boundaries, you’re reclaiming your power. You’re telling the world—and yourself—that your needs matter. This isn’t about being selfish; it’s about self-preservation. Without boundaries, we become vulnerable to the toxic energies of others, and that can deeply affect how we show up in our daily lives.
Recognizing Toxic Relationships
The first step in setting boundaries is identifying the relationships that are toxic. This might not be easy, especially if you’ve been conditioned to believe that the toxic behavior you’re experiencing is normal. It’s important to get honest with yourself and ask:
- How do I feel after spending time with this person?
- Do I dread interactions with them?
- Am I constantly feeling guilty, ashamed, or small around them?
If any of these resonate, it might be time to reconsider how much access they have to your energy. Toxic people often manipulate and gaslight, turning the blame on you and making you feel guilty for even considering boundaries. But their discomfort with your boundaries is not your responsibility.
Setting and Enforcing Boundaries
Once you’ve identified where boundaries need to be set, the next step is enforcing them—firmly and unapologetically. This is where many people struggle because we fear confrontation, rejection, or judgment. But here’s the thing: boundaries are not about controlling someone else’s behavior. They are about controlling how you allow someone to treat you.
For example, if someone frequently disrespects your time, you might say, “I can’t continue to meet up with you if you keep canceling last minute. My time is valuable.” And if they continue to cross that boundary, it’s okay to create distance.
One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn is that it’s not my job to fix other people or to make them comfortable at the expense of my own peace. When someone crosses a boundary you’ve set, you’re not required to explain yourself over and over again. You’re allowed to disengage, walk away, or say no without guilt.
Energetic Boundaries Are Just as Important
Beyond physical or verbal boundaries, it’s crucial to protect your energy on an emotional and spiritual level. Toxic people can take up mental space long after the conversation has ended. That’s why practices like cord-cutting, energy cleansing, and even a simple ritual of intention-setting can help release their hold on you.
In our episode, I shared a powerful moment where I had to block someone from my phone and social media. The relief that followed wasn’t just about not having to see their messages; it was the energetic weight that lifted once I fully cut the cord. Setting that boundary was an act of reclaiming my peace, and I want that for you, too.
How to Start Setting Boundaries Today
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to begin, remember that it starts with awareness. Pay attention to how certain people make you feel and give yourself permission to protect your well-being. Boundaries are a form of self-care. When you honor your needs, you’re able to show up more fully and authentically in all areas of your life.
For those of you who feel stuck in the cycle of people-pleasing, afraid to set boundaries because of the guilt or fear of losing relationships, I want you to know that you don’t have to navigate this alone. In my program, The Ignition, I guide women through the process of reclaiming their power by setting boundaries, healing emotional wounds, and transforming their lives from the inside out. If you’re ready to work through the struggles of setting boundaries and finally put your well-being first, I invite you to join me.
